Talented Hoof (2004)

Post by mangodog » June 27th, 2014, 1:31 pm

Crushed,
  • she chose small crisp words of surrender
under the weight of His giant fanny
    or, if pulled from behind,
tugged at unusual phrases that might
lift the world to His face for a big juicy surprise

So, how did a stumbling, weeping, aimless creature
become the camel that wrote for God?

Walking unhurried under those warm starry nights
or resting in the extraordinary shade of His being
she had the time and a talented hoof
for carving poems in sand that became legend

    Passersby gasped and marveled,
nomads would follow and draw inspiration from them
scholars pondered the inscriptions over and over
for the effect they had on men and women

But in this part of the tale, you might be wondering . . .
“Now come on . . . what does a dromedary know of writing? ”

And my reply would be, “ Tethered to God
and the tablet of this earth,
with four good legs, oceans of sand and eyes that see forever,
how would you celebrate a love
    so close
    so deep
    so wild? ”

I kind of get were you are coming from this and that scares me a little. Just kidding, this is a real nifty write from the perspective of a camel with four good legs as pens and a whole dessert to write on. Awesome stuff.

Garith - I think this might be my all-time fave from you! Re-visiting our past can definitely get those juices flowing again. This put me in mind of "Charlotte's Web" but in sub-theme only. A wonderful mystery to ponder and wondering if one hump or two? :teary: A tongue-in-cheeky tale that developed into something quite extraordinary, cheers and blessings!

This shows me that people whom we expect have nothing to offer the world have more to offer than we think, and that what they offer is unique. They help in ways that the talented or popular cannot. I like that idea because it shows that each person has value. My hope for myself is to see that this value is not based on what people do for their communities, but simply because they are human beings, created by God for his pleasure. Good work with this poem.

There's a lot to love about this poem, and what drew me to it initially is how natural it sounds and comes together. It is woven with unusual fibers, but a reader still becomes attached because the writing flows superbly and the word choice is spot on. You could have written of any creatures, let alone a camel, and the reader would have been entranced by this amazing write. Then, there is the closing to this poetry that strikes home.

Beautiful work and congratulations on the spotlight!
Luke
