Lend Me a Penny

Post by domvanday » April 27th, 2014, 12:11 pm

Wishing wells become Willy-Wonker’d
with all the water flowing upside down,
soaking my fraternity with false opportunity.
The poor beg to surround me, glistening
as faded copper etching Goonish comedy.
They attempt a Charleston, then ragtime,
yet the truth unveils and we ultimately sing the blues
as a choir.

The silver sharks dance within their gold and paper,
as we implore gravity to build down towards the ground.
Throwing wildly, with constant hope, we just miss
for next time.

Yonder, above our heads the ignorant throw stones
with the blessing of the Queen’s courteous smile.
We seldom beg though, or be wide-eyed, or try to star
in an amateur version of Benjamin Button.
It is said we are the heroin and the cocaine to the
turncoats, those fated to be driven to Never-Never Land,
those dry, those with reflections with teeth dripping
in champagne.

My hands are crowded (with you) yet full of rust,
but I know my place now,
tis’ with the drenched
in our mud and our lovely chaos
every time.

A few clever references along the way here added another dimension to the poem, and I was particularly impressed with how you played on the whimsical feeling evoked by some of them. That sense of whimsy seemed particularly relevant and helped me to see the speaker as someone content by a more simple kind of fun, even if other people looked to drag them down to a lower level. At times I felt like this played on childhood, but on further reflection I suspect it might be more about the joyous spirit and imagination of childhood being re-enacted in adulthood.
A really cool OM piece, much enjoyed.

Getting the vibe here Dom that you might be feeling uncomfortable in your present surroundings as a day trader or banker maybe. Not really your kind of people and the irresistible urge is always there; calling you to return perhaps. A very solid work and welcome again to TPS! Enjoyed the modern day motion picture references, cheers!

There is indeed a irreverent flippancy here and a niggling hidden smirk that the writer is privy to frivolity that others can't possibly understand. There seems to be a bit of "finger pointing" too, acknowledging some up-tight types surrounding. Are you making wishes at a wishing well, wishing for lightness and better times? I just know I like this and will be watching for more from your "pen". Thanks, this was very enjoyable and enviable. I can't write like this and wish I could.

This is a lovely poem, and well deserving of the spotlight. There's some rather clever references in here. I enjoyed reading this! Congrats!

Enjoyed the free, surreal fluency of this, something dream-like, reminded me a little of Edith Sitwell. Congrats on Spotlight.

There are some colorful images in your poem like 'The silver sharks dance within their gold and paper', '...all the water flowing upside down,' and 'Yonder, above our heads the ignorant throw stones...'
Basically it was an upside down world for me. It was bizarre and dreamlike registering little meaning for me. I decided it was best for me to enjoy the poem as though it were a dream. Congrats for The TPS Spotlight recognition.

Wow Dom so surreal and aversive and interpersonal. Truly a gem to marvel over. Thank you for sharing, for I truly enjoyed reading the poetry. Certainly a piece worthy of the showcase.
