Faerie Paths

Post by Rainman » December 10th, 2013, 9:54 am

Sometimes I recall that duffel coat walk
through the old woods.
The smell of frost and winter bonfires in the air,
and you, playfully punching my arm
as I point to the special trees,
hawthorn and elder,
home to the faeries.
Cobweb, mustard seed, peaseblossom, mote.

Ah, but they were there that day.....
in the blush of your cheek,
in the feel of your hand in mine,
holding on so tight,
as if we would float away.

I received such a cool image in my mind when I read this. It was like viewing a Norman Rockwell winter calendar for magick, flipped to an early winter month. I love the title too, for this masterful (w)rite is a keeper for any lover's stroll.

This is one of those poems which is deceptively simple to look at, but oh-so-effective to read. I was as stuck by 'duffel coat walk' as anything else, it's such a clever kenning which sets the scene before the more intimate moments which follow. I really like how you played on such a sweet idea like faeries without becoming overly sweet, and then backed up the speaker's sentiment with the 'proof' of their presence, it was so clever and beguiling.
Definitely a 'wish I'd written it' kind of poem for me.

You brought me back to one of my favorite books. The faeries weren't so good in it though. Good write.

Reminds me of nostalgic feelings for a place and person of special interest. Lovely, well done.

Easy spotlight, the vivid image of the coat makes the enchantment plausible, full of nostalgia that hovers between fact and reality mx

Sometimes I think that the poems I appreciate the most are about things that are easily overlooked or forgotten. In this poem, the memory of a walk with a loved one, the sights and smells of a time of year, the feeling of something special in the external world and in the bond between two people mirror each other and both have a magical quality.

This poem succeeds in capturing that magic and makes it something others can share in, which is maybe the best part of poetry.

Every couple in love should have moments like this to recall. Narrator and his loved one with their memories can be transported back to the place where he can feel afresh her holding his hand tightly and see the blush on her face, let alone recalling the Hawthorne and Elder trees and remember sharing their fairy history with her. Thank you for such a pleasant reading experience. Congratulations on the TPS Spotlight.

Something from another time; when magic was in the air and alive in all things RM. You have captured that moment and distilled the essence in this remarkable recollection, cheers and congratulations!

It's no surprise this is such a popular piece, it is written with that mix of concrete imagery and between the lines romanticism which is hard to resist. Even as I grow older and more cynical it's hard to resist something with such a romantic scene, the idea of two lovers out in the cold making their own warmth is most endearing.
A lovely piece of poetry, congratulations on the spotlight!
