The Night That Jesus Called.

Post by dornicks » September 5th, 2013, 3:58 pm

My hand beneath her weary head
a finger on her pulse
as she slipped off towards the dead
for better not for worse,
her features told a tale serene
contentment ruled the day
so from my eye no tear was seen
as Mother slipped away.

Well in excess of ninety years
she laboured in the yard
was frequently reduced to tears
for times were often hard,
the love that blossomed in her heart
she gave to one and all
and sadness got to play no part
the night that Jesus called.

I have to agree with Dew here, this is one of those poems which needs little in the way of a comment because the words say it all, and as the poem itself suggests that the image of serenity is enough I will, respectfully, only add that I think this is a beautifully penned tribute.

Not my Mom, but my sister I was there for when the head-holding happened.
She was not serene but lost and scared when she died- only 15.....

But this was a very poignant moment you write about - I noticed an interesting switch -
from one who laboured hard in her yard, to having that HUGE flower
of a heart to share - almost like that was what she was truly cultivating all along.

Those moments are not easily forgotten - truly enjoyed......Drew

Dear Dornicks, You spoke for many of us here and spoke beautifully.

I had the privilege to hold my mothers hand as she died. Thank you.

There is nothing one can do but feel for your loss and appreciate along with you the well flourished life you speak of. This is a beautiful written tribute and it truly touched my emotional psyche...This is a (w)rite for us all.

What a beautiful, loving tribute to a wonderful woman of faith. Heartfelt thanks for this artistry in words of comfort. Suggest reading "A Letter from Brooklyn" by Derek Walcott (Poet Laureate of the 80s) - always brings me comfort too, cheers!

I am sorry, V, for the loss of your mother. From the things I have heard from you about her, she was a most loving and amazing woman. And I know she was very proud of her son. This is told with such loving clarity, and tender acceptance, that I am enviable of it. Excellent, my friend. A truly fittng tribute poem.
