On Starving

Post by dead_sun_rising » January 7th, 2013, 6:43 pm

What hunger,
What burns my innards.
As I feast on thoughts,
But growing thinner.

It rumbles,
It roars,
It yearns.

The fire rages,
How it burns.
At my center.
In my core.

Wan fists bleed and bruise,
As they greet the jagged floor.
But when I drift,
To distant shores,
Knuckles sore, fade to blue.

Until once again,
Once more,
I hear that horrid roar.

It makes me wonder if hitting the floor with wan fists would be the best option to take. it reminds me of myself when I was a kid and how I used to become extremely angry sometimes and my mind would become blank with obliterating anger, until afterwards where I would often try and think fruitlessly about why I was angry in first place. I'm not suggesting that's the same as this though. But I still get overwhelmed with emotions these days too, and so do probably a lot of other people, just in different ways.

I'd imagine I would feel completely wretched if I were to go without food willingly for any real length of time and yet people do it all the time.

I really like these two lines:

"As I feast on thoughts,
But growing thinner."

Yes, I can relate to this excellently. You summarized a part of a struggle in existing eloquently there. The mind, too full, lets the body go to waste while it wrestles with its demons.

Good write. I can see the literal sense of starving from lack of food. Then I see other layers, hungry for knowledge that is kept from you, hunger for love, starving from loneliness. So, any poem that makes me think, is well done, and I appreciate the write.
